Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the relationship between animals and their environment in the context of Earth Science.
Materials and Prep
- Animal Crossing game (any version)
- Computer or gaming console to play the game
- Notebook and pen/pencil
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Play Animal Crossing: Begin by playing the Animal Crossing game, exploring the virtual environment, and interacting with different animal characters. Take note of the animals' behaviors, habitats, and interactions with the environment.
- Observation and Reflection: After playing the game, take a break and reflect on the observations made. Write down at least three examples of how animals in the game interact with their environment and why it is important for their survival.
- Research: Use the internet or available resources to research real-life examples of animals and their interactions with the environment. Choose one animal and write a short paragraph describing its habitat, diet, and any adaptations it has developed to survive in its environment.
- Compare and Contrast: Compare the animal you researched with one of the animal characters from Animal Crossing. Identify similarities and differences in their behaviors, habitats, and adaptations.
- Discussion: Share your findings with a family member or friend. Discuss why understanding the relationship between animals and their environment is important in both virtual and real-life contexts.
Seventh Grade Talking Points
- "In Earth Science, we study how living organisms, like animals, interact with their environment."
- "Animals have specific habitats where they live and find the resources they need to survive."
- "Different animals have different adaptations, which are special characteristics or behaviors that help them survive in their habitats."
- "By observing and studying animals, we can learn more about the delicate balance of ecosystems and how human activities can impact them."
- "Animal Crossing is a virtual game that simulates real-life interactions between animals and their environment. It can help us understand the concepts we learn in Earth Science."
