Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a clearer understanding of how art has evolved through different decades, recognizing key styles and movements, and will create their own artwork inspired by these styles.
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any type will do)
- Pencils, markers, or crayons
- Access to a device for research (optional, but helpful)
- Knowledge about major art movements (like Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, etc.)
Activities
-
Art Movement Research:
The student will choose 3 different art movements from the past century to research. They will note key characteristics, famous artists, and iconic works. This will help them understand how styles have changed over time.
-
Create an Art Timeline:
Using the information gathered, the student will create a visual timeline on paper, illustrating the different art movements and their key features. This can include drawings or symbols that represent each style.
-
Style-Inspired Artwork:
After learning about various styles, the student will select one style to create their own artwork. They can use any materials available to them, focusing on the techniques and themes of the chosen movement.
-
Art Gallery Walk:
Finally, the student will display their artwork alongside their timeline. They can take turns presenting their findings and creations as if they are hosting an art gallery, explaining their artistic choices.
