Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lincoln will be able to apply math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through engaging activities inspired by Fortnite, enhancing his problem-solving skills while having fun!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for calculations and notes
  • Timer or stopwatch to keep track of activity times
  • Fortnite-themed math problems (to be created during the lesson)
  • Access to a whiteboard or large paper for group activities (optional)

Before the lesson, prepare a list of Fortnite-themed scenarios that incorporate math problems, ensuring they are appropriate and engaging for Lincoln.

Activities

  • Fortnite Character Stats Challenge

Lincoln will create a few Fortnite characters and assign them health points, shield points, and damage points. He will then calculate the total points for each character and compare them to determine which character is the strongest.

  • Building Materials Math Race

Using imaginary building materials like wood, brick, and metal, Lincoln will solve math problems related to building structures in Fortnite. For example, "If it takes 10 wood to build one wall, how much wood do you need for 5 walls?"

  • Loot Drop Probability Game

Lincoln will explore the concept of probability by calculating the chances of finding certain loot in the game. He can create a simple chart with different loot types and determine the likelihood of finding each type based on provided percentages.

  • Victory Royale Budgeting

Lincoln will plan a strategy for a hypothetical Fortnite match, budgeting his resources (like gold or materials) to maximize his chances of winning. He will calculate how much of each resource he needs based on his strategy.

Talking Points

  • "Math is like building in Fortnite; you need to know how many materials you have to create something awesome!"
  • "When we talk about character stats, we’re using addition to find out who is the strongest. Can you think of a time when you had to add up points?"
  • "Probability is all about chances! Just like you might have a better chance of finding a rare item in a specific location, we can calculate chances with math!"
  • "Budgeting is important in Fortnite, just like in real life. How do you think planning your resources can help you win?"
