Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to solve basic math problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, while also improving their vocabulary and comprehension skills through engaging activities related to their favorite video games.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for math problems
  • Index cards for vocabulary words
  • Access to a timer (can use a phone or clock)
  • Whiteboard or large paper for group work (optional)
  • Knowledge of basic math operations and vocabulary related to video games

Activities

  • Math Challenge: Game Stats

Using the student’s favorite sports (like football and basketball), create a set of math problems based on game statistics. For example, if a player scored 20 points in a game and another player scored 15, ask how many points they scored in total. This will help the student practice addition and subtraction while relating to something they enjoy.

  • Vocabulary Battle: Fortnite Edition

Create a set of index cards with vocabulary words related to Fortnite and other video games. The student will draw a card and provide the definition or use it in a sentence. For every correct answer, they can earn points, similar to a video game scoring system.

  • Street Fighter Math Duel

Set up a "math duel" where the student has to solve a series of math problems to "defeat" an opponent. For each correct answer, they can "attack" their opponent. This can be a fun way to practice multiplication and division under time pressure.

Talking Points

  • "Math is like leveling up in a game; every problem you solve helps you get stronger!"
  • "Think of vocabulary words as power-ups; they help you express yourself better in conversations and writing!"
  • "Just like in sports, practice makes perfect. The more you practice math, the better you'll get!"
  • "When you solve a math problem, it's like completing a quest in a game. Each one brings you closer to your goal!"
  • "Using video games in our lessons makes learning fun and relatable. What’s your favorite way to learn?"
  • "Remember, even the best players had to start from the beginning. Don't be afraid to make mistakes!"
