Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and count winter-themed objects, understand basic shapes, and engage in simple addition and subtraction through fun activities related to winter.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials are needed for this lesson, but be prepared to use your imagination!
- Know some winter-themed objects (like snowflakes, snowmen, and mittens) to incorporate into the activities.
- Be ready to encourage counting and shape recognition throughout the lesson.
Activities
-
Winter Object Counting:
Go outside (if possible) or look out the window and count winter objects together. For example, count the number of snowflakes you see falling or the number of snowmen in the neighborhood.
-
Shape Snowflakes:
Draw different shapes in the snow or on paper and talk about them. For example, create a snowflake using circles, triangles, and squares. Ask the student to help you identify the shapes.
-
Addition with Mittens:
Use your fingers to represent mittens. For example, say, "I have 2 mittens on my left hand and 1 mitten on my right hand. How many mittens do I have in total?" Help the student count them together.
-
Subtraction with Snowballs:
Imagine making snowballs. Start with 5 imaginary snowballs and say, "If I throw away 2 snowballs, how many do I have left?" Encourage the student to count down from 5.
Talking Points
- "Look at all the snowflakes! Can you count how many you see?"
- "What shape is this snowflake? Can you find another one like it?"
- "If I have 2 mittens and I add 1 more, how many do I have? Let's count them together!"
- "If we have 5 snowballs and I throw 2 away, how many do we have left? Let's count down!"
