- Kitchen/Practical Life: Child-sized apron, mixing bowl, wooden spoon, baking ingredients (flour, apples, oats, honey, spices), child-safe knife for chopping soft fruit.
Weekly Rhythm and Guiding Principles
This plan follows a predictable weekly rhythm, which provides security and helps the child breathe in and out through different types of activities. Each week will follow this general structure, with the specific activities changing to match the theme.
- Arrival & Free Play: Begin with quiet, imaginative play using simple, natural toys.
- Circle Time (Breathing Out - Active): Songs, verses, and movement that reflect the weekly theme. This is joyful and engaging.
- Story Time (Breathing In - Receptive): A simple story told with the same words each day for the whole week. Use props like silks and figures to bring it to life. Repetition builds memory and inner picturing.
- Artistic/Practical Activity (Breathing In - Focused): A hands-on, process-oriented activity. We focus on the experience, not the finished product.
- Tidy Up & Goodbye: A gentle transition to end the session, often with a song.
10-Week Thematic Plan: The Journey of the Little Seed
Our overarching story for the term follows a little seed as it is carried by the wind, finds a home in the earth, and rests through the cold winter, waiting for spring. Each week's story is a small chapter in this journey.
Week 1: The Golden Leaves
- Circle Time: Song: "Autumn leaves are falling down, falling down, falling down. Autumn leaves are falling down, red, yellow, orange, and brown." (Tune: London Bridge). Action: Pretend to be trees swaying and leaves twirling to the ground.
- Story Time: Introduce the little seed, snug in its flower pod, watching the golden leaves dance in the wind. Use yellow and red playsilks to be the dancing leaves.
- Artistic Activity: Leaf rubbing. Go on a nature walk to collect beautiful leaves. Place them under paper and rub over the top with the side of a block crayon to reveal their shapes.
- Practical Activity: Sorting nature treasures. Sort the collected items from your walk into different bowls (gumnuts, leaves, stones).
Week 2: The Windy Day
- Circle Time: Verse: "The wind is pushing, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh! The trees are bending, swoosh, swoosh, swoosh!" (with pushing and swaying motions).
- Story Time: The wind blows hard and helps the little seed fly from its flower pod, tumbling and twirling through the air on a grand adventure. Swirl a silk through the air with a small "seed" (a felt ball) on it.
- Artistic Activity: Wet-on-wet watercolour painting. Use yellow and red on wet paper and watch the colours flow and dance together like the wind and leaves.
- Practical Activity: Make a simple leaf kite. Tie a long piece of yarn to a sturdy, large leaf and run with it outside.
Week 3: A Helper Gnome
- Circle Time: Song: "A little gnome so stout and good, works so hard in the autumn wood." (Create simple actions like hammering and digging).
- Story Time: The little seed lands on the ground. A kindly gnome with a red hat finds it and gently tucks it into a small hole in the earth to keep it safe.
- Artistic Activity: Beeswax modeling. Warm a piece of beeswax in your hands until it is soft. Model a simple shape like a little seed, a snail, or a coiled-up worm.
- Practical Activity: Baking apple crumble. H can help wash the apples, spoon the ingredients, and mix the crumble topping with their hands.
Week 4: The Earth Blanket
- Circle Time: Fingerplay: "Here is the earth, a lovely bed (pat flat palm). Here is the seed, resting its head (place fingertip on palm). The leaves fall down, a blanket light (flutter fingers down). And cover it all for the long, cold night."
- Story Time: The gnome covers the little seed with a blanket of soft brown leaves to keep it warm as the air grows colder. Gently lay a brown playsilk over the "seed".
- Artistic Activity: Crayon drawing. Using warm, earthy block crayons (browns, reds, deep oranges), cover the paper in colour to create a warm "earth blanket".
- Practical Activity: Raking leaves in the garden to make a compost pile or "blanket" for the garden beds.
Week 5: The First Rain
- Circle Time: Song: "Pitter-patter, pitter-patter, listen to the rain. Pitter-patter, pitter-patter, on the window pane." (Use fingers to make rain motions).
- Story Time: The first autumn rains come. The little seed feels the gentle "drip, drop" of water, giving it a nice drink before its long sleep.
- Artistic Activity: "Raindrop" painting. Use blue watercolour on wet paper. Let H gently tap the brush to make raindrop patterns. Observe how they spread and mingle.
- Practical Activity: Making vegetable soup. H can help wash vegetables and tear leafy greens. Talk about how the rain helps the vegetables grow.
Week 6: Animals Get Ready
- Circle Time: Movement game: Act out different animals preparing for winter. A squirrel burying nuts (crouching and digging), a bear finding a cave (crawling under a table), a bird flying south (running with arms outstretched).
- Story Time: From its cozy spot, the little seed hears the busy feet of a squirrel hiding nuts and feels the slow, heavy tread of a bear looking for a place to sleep.
- Artistic Activity: Making a felted acorn. Using warm, soapy water and wool roving, show H how to roll the wool into a ball and then shape it into an acorn.
- Practical Activity: Make "squirrel food" - a simple trail mix of seeds, nuts (if age-appropriate), and dried fruit.
Week 7: The Light in the Dark
- Circle Time: Song: "Twinkle, twinkle little star..." This week we start focusing on the growing darkness and the beauty of light.
- Story Time: The days grow shorter and the nights longer. The little seed is deep in the dark earth, but it dreams of the starlight and the moonlight shining above.
- Artistic Activity: Making a paper lantern. Decorate a piece of paper with crayons or paint. Roll it into a cylinder and attach a handle. Place a battery-operated tealight inside to see it glow.
- Practical Activity: Polishing. Give H a soft cloth and some child-safe polish (or a little olive oil) to polish a small wooden bowl or smooth stone. This brings out the inner "light" of the object.
Week 8: The Frosty Morning
- Circle Time: Verse: "Jack Frost is a mischievous fellow, he paints the windows with silver and yellow." (Wiggle fingers like painting).
- Story Time: One morning, the ground above the little seed is covered in sparkling frost. Everything is quiet, white, and magical.
- Artistic Activity: Making window stars. Teach a simple fold for a translucent kite paper window star. When hung on a window, the light shines through beautifully.
- Practical Activity: Baking bread. The warmth of the oven and the smell of baking bread brings a sense of comfort and inner warmth to a cold day. H can help knead the dough.
Week 9: The Quiet of Winter
- Circle Time: This week, make circle time quieter. Hum a simple tune, and do slow, gentle movements like rocking or swaying.
- Story Time: The world is very still now. The little seed is sleeping soundly, deep under the earth blanket. All is peaceful and quiet. The story is very short and ends with "Shhhh... the seed is sleeping."
- Artistic Activity: Finger knitting. Using thick, soft wool yarn, teach the simple rhythm of finger knitting. It is a quiet, repetitive, and calming activity.
- Practical Activity: Caring for an indoor plant. Wiping its leaves and giving it a small drink of water.
Week 10: A Promise of Spring
- Circle Time: Song: "The earth is sleeping, the seeds are waiting, for the sun to come and wake them up again." (A song of hope and looking forward).
- Story Time: In its deep winter sleep, the little seed dreams. It dreams of a warm yellow sun, and it knows that one day, it will be time to wake up and grow. This concludes our story arc for the term.
- Artistic Activity: Beeswax candle. Gently roll a sheet of beeswax honeycomb around a wick to create a beautiful, sweet-smelling candle.
- Practical Activity: Celebrate the end of the journey by lighting the candle (with supervision) and sharing a special snack, like star-shaped biscuits, in the gentle light. Talk about the little seed's long rest and the adventures to come in spring.
