Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills using a deck of cards.
Materials and Prep
- A standard deck of playing cards
- Paper and pencil for taking notes
Activities
- Shuffle the deck of cards and place it face down.
Take turns drawing two cards from the deck and perform basic arithmetic operations with the numbers on the cards. For example, if you draw a 5 of hearts and a 7 of diamonds, you can add them together to get 12.
Encourage the student to think creatively and use different operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Keep track of the answers and discuss the correct solutions as you go along.
Continue playing and solving arithmetic problems until you have gone through the entire deck.
For an added challenge, you can introduce a time limit for solving each problem or set a target number of correct answers to achieve.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with a deck of cards while practicing our arithmetic skills."
- "We will be drawing two cards at a time and using the numbers on the cards to solve math problems."
- "We can add, subtract, multiply, or divide the numbers on the cards to find the answers."
- "Let's take turns and see who can come up with the correct answers first."
- "Remember to write down your answers and discuss the correct solutions as we go along."
- "We will continue playing until we have used all the cards in the deck."
- "For an extra challenge, we can set a time limit or a target number of correct answers to achieve."
