Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and describe some key aspects of ancient civilizations, including their daily life, culture, and contributions to our world today.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons/colored pencils
  • Clay or playdough
  • Storybooks about ancient civilizations (if available)
  • A space to draw and create

Before the lesson, it might be helpful to have a basic understanding of a few ancient civilizations like Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome. Think about what makes them interesting!

Activities

  • Drawing Ancient Life:

Have the student draw a scene from daily life in an ancient civilization, like a market in Ancient Egypt or a Greek festival. Encourage them to use their imagination and colors!

  • Build a Miniature Structure:

Using clay or playdough, the student can create a miniature version of an ancient structure, such as a pyramid or a Greek temple. This will help them visualize what these amazing buildings looked like.

  • Story Time:

If you have storybooks about ancient civilizations, read one together. Discuss the characters and what life was like in that time. If no books are available, you can make up a story about a day in the life of a child from an ancient civilization.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that ancient people lived a long, long time ago? They had different ways of living than we do today!"
  • "Ancient Egyptians built huge pyramids! They were tombs for their kings and queens. Can you imagine living in a place like that?"
  • "In Ancient Greece, people loved to tell stories and watch plays. They even had special places called theaters for performances!"
  • "Romans were great builders! They made roads and aqueducts to bring water to their cities. What do you think it would be like to walk on a Roman road?"
  • "Many things we use today, like the calendar and the alphabet, came from ancient civilizations. Isn’t that cool?"
  • "What do you think it would be like to be a kid in ancient times? Would you play different games or wear different clothes?"
