Objective
By the end of this lesson, Gatlin will understand the basic concepts of seeds and flowers, including how seeds grow into plants and the parts of a flower. Gatlin will also engage in hands-on activities that make learning about nature fun and interactive!
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (any type, like beans or sunflower seeds)
- Soil (if available, or a substitute like sand or dirt)
- Small containers (like cups or small pots)
- Water
- Paper and crayons for drawing
- Access to a sunny window or outdoor space
Before the lesson, it’s helpful to know the basics of how plants grow from seeds and the parts of a flower such as petals, stem, and leaves. Make sure to have a sunny spot ready for planting seeds!
Activities
-
Planting Seeds:
Gatlin will fill small containers with soil and plant seeds. While planting, discuss how seeds need soil, water, and sunlight to grow. This hands-on activity will help Gatlin understand the growth process!
-
Flower Drawing:
Using paper and crayons, Gatlin will draw a picture of a flower. Encourage him to label the parts of the flower such as petals, stem, and leaves. This will reinforce what he learns about flower anatomy.
-
Story Time:
Read a short story about a seed that grows into a flower. This can be a fun way to visualize the journey of a seed. Discuss with Gatlin what happens to the seed in the story.
-
Nature Walk:
If possible, take a short walk outside to look for flowers and seeds in nature. Ask Gatlin to point out different flowers and discuss their colors and shapes. This will help him connect what he learned to the real world!
Talking Points
- "What do you think happens to a seed when we plant it in the soil?"
- "Can you name some parts of a flower? What do you think each part does?"
- "Why do you think seeds need water and sunlight to grow?"
- "What colors do you see in the flowers outside? Can you find a flower that looks different from the others?"
- "How do you think the seed feels when it starts to grow into a flower?"
