Objective
By the end of this lesson, RR will understand basic concepts of chemical reactions, including how substances can change into new substances, and will be able to identify simple reactions through fun, hands-on activities.
Materials and Prep
- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Food coloring (optional)
- Clear plastic cups or containers
- Paper and crayons or markers for drawing
Before the lesson, make sure to discuss safety with RR, such as not tasting any materials and wearing an apron or old clothes since things might get messy!
Activities
-
Volcano Reaction:
RR will create a mini volcano using vinegar and baking soda. By combining the two in a cup, she will observe the fizzing reaction and can even add food coloring to make it more colorful!
-
Mixing Colors:
RR will mix different colors of food coloring in separate cups of water to see how colors can change and combine, demonstrating the concept of solutions.
-
Drawing Reactions:
RR will draw pictures of her favorite reactions and label them, helping to reinforce what she has learned about chemical changes.
Talking Points
- "Do you know what happens when we mix vinegar and baking soda? It makes bubbles and fizz! That's a chemical reaction!"
- "When we mix colors, we are also creating new things! Just like how different ingredients in cooking can make yummy dishes!"
- "A chemical reaction is when substances change into something new. Like how baking soda and vinegar make a gas!"
- "Can you think of other places where you see chemical reactions? Like when you bake cookies or when a car gets rusty?"
- "It's important to be safe when we're doing experiments. Always remember to ask for help if you're unsure!"
- "Drawing your reactions helps us remember what we learned. What was your favorite part of today?"
- "Science is like magic, but it's real! Every time we do an experiment, we're discovering something new!"
- "What do you think would happen if we tried different amounts of vinegar or baking soda? Let's experiment!"
