Objective

By the end of this lesson, RR will understand how heat affects the state of matter, specifically how adding or removing heat can change a solid into a liquid and vice versa. RR will learn through fun activities that demonstrate these concepts in a hands-on way.

Materials and Prep

  • Ice cubes
  • A small pot or pan
  • A stove or heat source (with adult supervision)
  • A thermometer (if available)
  • A timer or stopwatch
  • Pencil and paper for notes

Before the lesson, ensure that you have a safe area to conduct the activities, especially when using the stove. Discuss safety rules with RR about handling hot materials.

Activities

  • Melting Ice Experiment:

RR will observe how ice cubes change from solid to liquid by placing them at room temperature and timing how long it takes for them to melt completely. RR can also use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the water as it melts.

  • Boiling Water Experiment:

With adult supervision, RR will heat water in a pot on the stove. RR will observe how the water changes from liquid to gas (steam) as it heats up. Use a timer to see how long it takes to reach boiling point.

  • Freezing Water Activity:

RR will fill a container with water and place it in the freezer. After a few hours, RR will check to see how the liquid water has turned into solid ice. RR can take notes on the time it took to freeze.

Talking Points

  • "What happens to ice when it gets warm? That's right, it melts into water!"
  • "Can you think of other things that melt? Like chocolate or butter? They all need heat!"
  • "When we heat water, what do we see? That's right, steam! That's the water changing into a gas!"
  • "Why do you think the water turns back into ice in the freezer? It's because we are taking away heat!"
  • "Every time we add or remove heat, we are changing the state of the matter. Isn't that cool?"
  • "Can you name other examples of solids turning into liquids or liquids turning into solids?"
  • "Remember, heat can make things change! Just like magic!"
  • "So, if we want to change something from solid to liquid, we add heat. If we want to change it back, we take heat away!"
