Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of leadership skills, including effective communication, teamwork, and decision-making. They will also engage in activities that foster these skills and reflect on their personal leadership style.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for journaling and note-taking
  • Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming sessions
  • Timer (can be a phone timer)
  • Access to a quiet space for discussions and activities

Before the lesson, think about your own experiences with leaders you admire and what qualities they possess. This will help you engage more deeply with the activities.

Activities

  • Leadership Qualities Brainstorm - Spend 10 minutes writing down qualities of leaders you admire. Afterward, discuss these qualities and why they are important. This will help you identify traits you want to develop in yourself.
  • Team Challenge - Create a simple challenge that requires teamwork to solve. For example, building a tower using only paper and tape. Reflect on how you communicated and worked with others during the activity.
  • Role-Playing Scenarios - Engage in role-playing where you take turns being the leader and the follower in various scenarios (e.g., planning a party, resolving a conflict). This will help you practice decision-making and communication skills.
  • Reflection Journal - After each activity, write a short reflection on what you learned about leadership. Consider what went well, what was challenging, and how you can improve.

Talking Points

  • "Leadership is not just about being in charge; it's about inspiring and guiding others." - Discuss how effective leaders motivate their team.
  • "Good communication is key to being a successful leader." - Talk about the importance of listening and sharing ideas clearly.
  • "Teamwork makes the dream work!" - Highlight how collaboration enhances problem-solving and creativity.
  • "Every leader has a unique style. What’s yours?" - Encourage the student to think about their natural leadership tendencies and how they can develop them further.
  • "Mistakes are learning opportunities." - Emphasize that everyone makes mistakes, and what matters is how we learn from them.
  • "A great leader knows when to step back and let others shine." - Discuss the importance of recognizing and empowering the strengths of others in a group.
