Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have designed and constructed a simple boat using basic materials. They will understand the principles of buoyancy, design, and engineering, integrating concepts from art, English, history, math, physical education, and science.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (for drawing designs and making the boat)
  • Scissors (for cutting the paper)
  • Tape or glue (for assembling the boat)
  • A container of water (for testing buoyancy)
  • Markers or colored pencils (for decorating the boat)
  • Ruler (for measuring dimensions)
  • Access to a computer or books (for research)

Before starting the lesson, ensure the student understands basic concepts of buoyancy and design principles. It may also be helpful to review famous boats in history and their significance.

Activities

  • Research Famous Boats

The student will research different types of boats throughout history, such as Viking ships, sailboats, and modern yachts. They should take notes on the unique features and purposes of each type.

  • Design Your Boat

Using the information gathered, the student will sketch their own boat design. They should consider factors such as size, shape, and materials while thinking about how their design will float.

  • Build the Boat

Using paper, scissors, and tape, the student will construct their boat based on their design. They should focus on making it as sturdy and buoyant as possible.

  • Test and Modify

The student will test their boat in the water container to see if it floats. If it sinks or tips over, they will have the opportunity to modify their design and test again.

  • Presentation

Finally, the student will present their boat design and explain the choices they made during the research, design, and testing phases. They can also discuss what they learned about buoyancy and boat design.

Talking Points

  • "What are the key features that make a boat float?"
  • "How does the shape of a boat affect its ability to move through water?"
  • "Can you think of any historical boats that had a significant impact on trade or exploration?"
  • "How can we use math to measure the dimensions of our boat and ensure it fits within the water container?"
  • "What artistic elements can you incorporate into your boat design to make it visually appealing?"
  • "What modifications did you make to your original design, and why were those changes necessary?"
