Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and use words in different situations, recognize grammar rules, comprehend various texts, and create their own culture-based stories or messages. They will also learn to identify body language and persuasive techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Storybooks or informational texts (can be any available at home)
  • Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming
  • Examples of advertisements or posters (drawn or printed)

Before the lesson, gather all materials and choose a couple of storybooks or informational texts to read together. Familiarize yourself with some basic examples of propaganda techniques to share with the student.

Activities

  • Word Play: Start with a fun game of word association. The student will say a word, and you will take turns saying related words. This helps them see how words connect in different contexts.
  • Story Time: Read a story together and pause to ask questions about the text. Encourage the student to infer what might happen next or express their opinions about the characters and events.
  • Draw Your Message: Have the student create a poster about something they love (like a favorite animal or hobby) using words, pictures, and colors. Discuss how to make it appealing to others.
  • Body Language Charades: Play a game where you act out different emotions or situations without speaking. The student has to guess what you are trying to convey using only your body language.
  • Propaganda Detective: Show the student some advertisements or posters. Discuss how colors, words, and images are used to persuade people. Ask them to think about why those choices were made.

Talking Points

  • "Words are like magic! They can change how we feel and what we think. Can you think of a word that makes you happy?"
  • "When we read a story, we can learn about the characters' feelings. How do you think the character felt when they did that?"
  • "Drawing a picture can tell a story too! What do you want your poster to say to someone who sees it?"
  • "Did you know that our bodies can talk too? How do you think someone feels when they smile?"
  • "Advertisements are like puzzles! They use special tricks to make us want things. What do you think makes an advertisement good?"
