Objective

By the end of this lesson, RR will have a better understanding of the different continents and oceans of the world, and will be able to identify key geographical features on a map. RR will also learn about how geography affects the climate and culture of different regions.

Materials and Prep

  • A blank sheet of paper
  • A pencil or colored pencils
  • A world map (can be drawn or printed)
  • Some fun facts about each continent and ocean (to be shared during the lesson)

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to have a basic understanding of what continents and oceans are, and to be ready to discuss some interesting facts about each one.

Activities

  • Map Drawing:

RR will draw a simple world map on a blank sheet of paper, labeling each continent and ocean. This will help RR visualize where each place is located.

  • Continent Exploration:

RR will choose one continent to research and write down three interesting facts about it. This can include information about the animals, people, or climate found there.

  • Ocean Adventure:

RR will create a mini-poster about one of the oceans, including its name, where it is located, and a few sea creatures that live there. This will help RR learn about the importance of oceans.

  • Geography Quiz:

At the end of the lesson, RR will take a fun quiz where I will ask questions about the continents and oceans. This will reinforce what RR has learned throughout the lesson.

Talking Points

  • "Can you name all the continents? There are seven of them!"
  • "Did you know that the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world? It's so big that it covers more area than all the land combined!"
  • "Each continent has its own unique animals. For example, Australia is famous for kangaroos and koalas!"
  • "The climate in Africa can be very hot, but did you know there are also snowy mountains there, like Mount Kilimanjaro?"
  • "Oceans are important because they help regulate the Earth's temperature and provide homes for many sea creatures!"
  • "Some countries in Europe are very close to each other, which is why you can travel from one to another very easily!"
  • "The Arctic and Antarctic regions are very cold and have icebergs. What do you think animals like polar bears eat?"
  • "Geography can affect how people live. For example, people who live near the ocean often eat a lot of seafood!"
