Objective

By the end of this lesson, Amelia Mae will understand the basic math and science concepts involved in baking bread. She will learn how to measure ingredients, observe the changes during the baking process, and appreciate the delicious results of her hard work!

Materials and Prep

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Yeast
  • Salt
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Oven
  • Timer
  • Clean workspace

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the oven is preheated to 375°F (190°C) and that all ingredients are measured out. Discuss the importance of cleanliness and safety in the kitchen.

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients: Amelia will measure out the flour, water, yeast, and salt using the measuring cups and spoons. This will help her practice her math skills by counting and measuring.
  • Mixing and Kneading: Amelia will mix the ingredients in the bowl and then knead the dough. This activity will help her understand the concept of combining materials and the physical changes that occur when dough is kneaded.
  • Watching the Dough Rise: After kneading, Amelia will place the dough in a warm spot and cover it. She can observe how the dough rises over time, which introduces her to the concept of fermentation and how yeast works.
  • Baking the Bread: Once the dough has risen, Amelia will shape it and place it in the oven. She will set the timer and learn about the importance of timing in baking.
  • Tasting and Reflecting: After the bread is baked, Amelia will taste her creation and reflect on what she learned during the process. She can think about what she liked and what she might do differently next time.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think happens when we mix all these ingredients together?"
  • "Can you count how many cups of flour we need? Let's measure it together!"
  • "When we knead the dough, we are helping it get strong. Why do you think that's important?"
  • "Look at the dough! It's getting bigger! Do you know why that happens?"
  • "Baking is like a science experiment. What do you think will happen when we put it in the oven?"
  • "How does the bread taste? What do you like most about it?"
  • "If we wanted to make this bread again, what would you change or keep the same?"
