Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will explore the properties of ice, understand its role in nature, and express their creativity through art and music while engaging in physical activity. They will also learn basic math concepts through measurement and observation.

Materials and Prep

  • Ice collected from frozen puddles
  • Paper and crayons/markers for art
  • Measuring cup or ruler (for measuring the ice)
  • Notebook for writing observations
  • Outdoor space to play safely with ice

Before the lesson, ensure that the ice is collected safely and that the outdoor area is suitable for activities. Discuss with the student the importance of being careful while playing outside in winter conditions.

Activities

  • Ice Sculpting: Encourage the student to use their hands to shape the ice into fun forms. They can create animals or abstract shapes. This activity helps them explore the texture and temperature of ice.

  • Ice Measurement: Use a measuring cup or ruler to measure the size of the ice pieces. Ask the student to record their findings in their notebook. This introduces basic math concepts like measurement and comparison.

  • Ice Art: Once the ice starts to melt, the student can use the water to create designs on paper. They can also use crayons or markers to draw pictures inspired by their ice creations.

  • Musical Ice Dance: Play music and have the student dance around the ice. Encourage them to express how the cold makes them feel through movement. This combines physical education with music.

  • Observation Journal: Have the student write or draw their observations about the ice melting and the changes they see. This encourages critical thinking and scientific observation.

Talking Points

  • "What happens to ice when it gets warm? Can you see it change?"
  • "How does it feel to touch the ice? Is it slippery or rough?"
  • "Can you think of other places where you see ice in nature? Like in winter or at the North Pole?"
  • "How can we measure things? Let's see how big this piece of ice is!"
  • "What colors do you see in the ice? How can we use these colors in our art?"
  • "How does moving around the ice make you feel? Can you dance like the ice is melting?"
  • "Why do you think ice is important for our planet? What role does it play?"
  • "What was your favorite thing to do with the ice today? Why did you like it?"
  • "How can we make sure we play safely outside in the winter? What should we be careful about?"
