Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the concept of culture and where people are born, as well as appreciate the diversity of different cultures through stories and activities.
Materials and Prep
- Books about different cultures (if available, or stories you can tell)
- Pictures of children from various cultures
- Crayons or markers
- Paper for drawing
- A globe or map (if available)
Before the lesson, think about some simple stories from different cultures that you can share, or be ready to make up fun stories about children around the world!
Activities
-
Story Time:
Read or tell a story from a different culture. Use simple language and make it engaging by using different voices for characters. Ask questions about the story to keep the child involved.
-
Draw Your Home:
Ask the child to draw a picture of their home or a place they love. Discuss how homes can look different in other cultures and what makes each one special.
-
Cultural Dress-Up:
Talk about different clothes people wear around the world. If you have any fun hats or scarves, let the child try them on and pretend to be from another culture!
-
World Map Exploration:
If you have a globe or map, point out where different cultures are from. Show the child how far away some places are and talk about the people who live there.
Talking Points
- "Do you know that people live all over the world? Some have different skin colors, languages, and clothes!"
- "This book is from a different culture. Let's see what makes their story special!"
- "Look at your drawing! What if someone from another country saw it? What would they think?"
- "Can you imagine wearing a dress like this from another country? What do you think it feels like?"
- "This is a map! It shows us where different people live. Isn't that exciting?"
