Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will explore the beauty of winter through sensory play, creative expression, and imaginative storytelling, all while engaging with the Reggio Emilia approach that emphasizes hands-on learning and self-directed exploration.

Materials and Prep

  • Snow (real or artificial)
  • Small containers or bowls
  • Colorful scarves or fabric pieces
  • Winter-themed storybooks
  • Blank paper and crayons or markers

Before the lesson, gather all materials in a designated play area. Ensure the space is safe and comfortable for exploration. Familiarize yourself with a couple of winter-themed storybooks to read during the lesson.

Activities

  • Winter Sensory Play:

Let the child explore the snow (or artificial snow) using their hands. Encourage them to feel the texture, make snowballs, and create shapes. Ask guiding questions like, "What does it feel like? Is it cold or fluffy?"

  • Winter Scarf Dance:

Use colorful scarves to mimic the movement of snowflakes falling. Play some gentle music and encourage the child to dance around, waving the scarves in the air. This activity promotes movement and creativity.

  • Storytime Adventure:

Read a winter-themed storybook together. After reading, ask the child to draw their favorite part of the story. This encourages comprehension and artistic expression.

  • Winter Art Creation:

Using crayons or markers, invite the child to create a winter scene on paper. They can draw snowmen, trees, or anything that reminds them of winter. Encourage them to share their artwork with you.

Talking Points

  • "Can you feel how cold the snow is? It’s like little ice crystals!"
  • "Look at how the scarves dance in the air, just like snowflakes!"
  • "What was your favorite part of the story we read? Can you draw it?"
  • "What colors do you want to use for your winter picture? Let's make it bright!"
