Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), including the roles of EMS personnel, common emergency medical procedures, and the importance of quick response in emergencies.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
  • First aid kit (for demonstration)
  • Space to move around for role-playing activities

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to familiarize yourself with basic first aid concepts and the roles of EMS personnel, such as EMTs and paramedics.

Activities

  • Role-Playing Scenarios:

The student will act out different emergency scenarios, such as a person fainting or a sprained ankle. They will take turns being the EMS personnel and the patient, discussing how to assess the situation and provide care.

  • Create an EMS Poster:

The student will create a colorful poster that explains what EMS is, the roles of EMS workers, and some basic first aid tips. This will help them organize their thoughts and present the information visually.

  • First Aid Basics:

Using a first aid kit, the student will learn about common items found in the kit and their uses. They can practice how to properly clean a wound or apply a bandage on a stuffed animal.

  • Emergency Call Simulation:

The student will practice making an emergency call to 911, learning how to clearly communicate the situation and what information to provide. They can practice with a family member or friend acting as the dispatcher.
