Objective
By the end of this lesson, River will be able to write a creative and engaging journal entry that captures the essence of spending 24 hours aboard the Sea Shepherd ship Allankay. This entry will reflect their thoughts, feelings, and observations during this unique experience in Brisbane.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook or journal
- Pen or pencil
- Timer (optional for timed activities)
- Quiet space for writing
Before starting, River should familiarize themselves with the Sea Shepherd organization and the purpose of the Allankay ship. A brief overview of marine conservation and the ship's mission will help set the context for the journal entry.
Activities
-
Imaginary Voyage:
River will close their eyes and imagine being aboard the Allankay. They should visualize the sights, sounds, and smells around them. After a few minutes, they will jot down a list of sensory details that come to mind.
-
Character Creation:
River will create a fictional character who is also on the ship. They should think about this character's background, reasons for being on the ship, and their feelings about the experience. This will add depth to the journal entry.
-
Writing Prompts:
Provide River with a few writing prompts to inspire their journal entry. For example, "What was the first thing you noticed when you boarded the ship?" or "Describe a moment when you felt connected to the ocean." These prompts will help guide their writing.
-
Timed Writing Challenge:
Set a timer for 15 minutes and encourage River to write continuously about their 24 hours on the ship without worrying about grammar or punctuation. This free-writing exercise will help them generate ideas and overcome writer's block.
