Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate physical fitness skills and knowledge related to outdoor activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Outdoor space (backyard, park, etc.)
  • Comfortable clothing and footwear
  • Water bottle
  • Weather-appropriate gear (sunscreen, hat, etc.)
  • Prior knowledge of basic outdoor safety rules

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Start with a brisk walk or light jog around the outdoor space to get the heart rate up and muscles warmed up.
  2. Obstacle Course: Set up a fun obstacle course using natural elements in the outdoor space. Include activities like crawling under a fallen tree, jumping over small rocks, balancing on a fallen log, etc. Time the student and challenge them to complete the course as fast as possible.
  3. Nature Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of natural items to find in the outdoor area, such as specific types of leaves, rocks, or flowers. Give the student the list and have them search for and collect the items. This activity can be done individually or in teams.
  4. Outdoor Yoga: Guide the student through a series of beginner-friendly yoga poses in the outdoor setting. Emphasize the connection between physical activity and mental relaxation.
  5. Cool-down and Reflection: Finish the lesson with a gentle cool-down activity, such as stretching or a short walk. Then, have a brief discussion with the student about their favorite activity from the lesson and what they enjoyed most about being outdoors.
