Objective

By the end of this lesson, Roxanne will be able to identify and pronounce various phonetic sounds, recognize common phonetic patterns, and apply her understanding of phonics to read simple words and sentences.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils for writing
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard (if available)
  • Colorful markers or crayons
  • Access to a quiet space for focused learning

Before the lesson, ensure that Roxanne is familiar with the basic alphabet sounds, as this will serve as the foundation for her phonics learning.

Activities

  • Sound Matching Game:

Roxanne will create flashcards with letters and pictures of objects that start with those letters. She will then match the letter flashcards with the corresponding picture flashcards, reinforcing the sounds associated with each letter.

  • Phonics Song:

Roxanne will create a fun song or rhyme that incorporates phonetic sounds. She can use a simple tune she knows and change the lyrics to include words that start with different phonetic sounds.

  • Word Building Blocks:

Using paper, Roxanne will cut out blocks with different letters on them. She will then try to build simple words by arranging the blocks in the correct order, helping her understand how sounds come together to form words.

  • Phonics Storytime:

Roxanne will write a short story using simple words that incorporate the phonetic sounds she has learned. She can illustrate her story, making it a fun and creative way to practice her phonics skills.

Talking Points

  • "Phonics is all about sounds! Each letter has its own sound, and when we put them together, we can make words."
  • "Can you think of a word that starts with the letter 'B'? Let's say it together and listen to the sound!"
  • "When we sound out letters, we can read new words. Let's try to blend these sounds: B-A-T. What word do we get?"
  • "Writing stories helps us use our phonics skills in a fun way. What sounds do you hear in the words you want to use?"
