Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to design their own civilization, understanding the key components that make a society function, including government, culture, economy, and geography.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- A notebook for notes and sketches
- Access to a quiet space for brainstorming
- Basic knowledge of different civilizations (e.g., Ancient Egypt, Greece, etc.)
Activities
-
Brainstorming Session:
Start by discussing what elements are important for a civilization. Think about things like government, culture, economy, and geography. Write down ideas in the notebook.
-
Design Your Civilization:
Using the ideas from the brainstorming session, draw a map of your civilization. Include important features like cities, rivers, and mountains.
-
Create a Culture:
Think about the people in your civilization. What language do they speak? What are their traditions and foods? Write a short paragraph describing the culture.
-
Present Your Civilization:
Prepare a short presentation about your civilization. Explain its government, culture, economy, and geography to an audience (which can be family members or even stuffed animals!).
Talking Points
- "What do you think makes a civilization successful? Is it the people, the government, or something else?"
- "Every civilization has a unique culture. What traditions do you think your civilization will have?"
- "How does geography influence the way people live? For example, do people living by the sea have different lifestyles than those living in the mountains?"
- "What kind of government do you think is best for your civilization? Would it be a democracy, a monarchy, or something different?"
- "Why is it important for a civilization to have a way to trade goods? How do you think your civilization will trade?"
