Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to use wooden blocks to build a miniature town, demonstrating creativity, spatial awareness, and basic architectural concepts.
Materials and Prep
- Wooden block set (various shapes and sizes)
- A flat surface to build on (like a table or the floor)
- Optional: A camera or smartphone to take pictures of the town)
Before starting, ensure you have enough space to build and play. Familiarize yourself with the different shapes and sizes of the blocks in the set.
Activities
-
Block Sorting:
Start by sorting the wooden blocks by size and shape. This will help the student understand the different types of blocks they have and how they can be used in building.
-
Designing the Town:
Ask the student to think about what buildings they want in their town (like a school, a house, or a store). They can draw a simple map on paper to plan where each building will go.
-
Building the Town:
Using the sorted blocks, let the student start building their town according to their design. Encourage them to be creative and think about how tall or wide they want each building.
-
Adding Details:
Once the main buildings are completed, encourage the student to add details like roads, parks, or even people using the blocks. This will help them think about how a town functions.
-
Story Time:
After the town is built, have the student create a story about the town. Who lives there? What do they do? This will help develop their storytelling skills.
Talking Points
- "What different shapes do you see in our block set?"
- "Can you tell me what buildings we should have in our town?"
- "How tall do you think we can make the school? Let's try!"
- "What would happen if we put the park next to the houses?"
- "Can you make up a story about who lives in our town?"
