Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the seven continents and name at least one animal that lives on each continent. The student will also understand where each continent is located on a world map.
Materials and Prep
- Books about continents and animals (e.g., "Animals of the World" or "Continents for Kids")
- World map or globe (if available)
- Notebook and crayons for drawing
- Comfortable reading space
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the continents and some animals that live in each. This will help guide discussions and answer any questions the student may have.
Activities
-
Story Time:
Begin by reading a book about the continents. As you read, pause to show pictures and discuss the animals found on each continent. Ask the student questions to engage them, such as "What animal do you see?" or "Can you make the sound of that animal?"
-
Animal Matching Game:
After reading, create a simple matching game where the student matches pictures of animals to their respective continents. You can draw or print out pictures for this activity.
-
Draw Your Favorite Animal:
Ask the student to choose their favorite animal from one of the continents and draw it in their notebook. Encourage them to use colors and be creative. Once done, they can share their drawing and tell you about the animal.
-
Continents Dance:
To make learning fun, create a little dance for each continent. For example, pretend to swim like a dolphin for Australia or stomp like an elephant for Africa. This helps the student remember the continents while being active!
Talking Points
- "Do you know how many continents there are? There are seven! Can you name them with me?"
- "Look at this animal! It lives in Africa. What do you think it eats?"
- "Which continent do you think is the biggest? Let's find out together!"
- "Isn't it cool how some animals can only be found in certain places? Why do you think that is?"
- "Can you pretend to be your favorite animal? Show me how it moves!"
