Objective

By the end of this lesson, Ella will have a better understanding of character development, storytelling techniques, and the moral dilemmas presented in the TV show "Dexter." She will also engage in creative activities that allow her to express her thoughts and ideas about the show.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or sketchbook
  • Pens or colored pencils
  • Timer (optional for activities)
  • Access to a computer or tablet (for research, if needed)

Before the lesson, ensure that Ella has watched a few episodes of "Dexter" to understand the characters and plot. Discuss some of the main themes and characters briefly to set the stage for the activities.

Activities

  • Character Analysis:

Ella will choose her favorite character from "Dexter" and write a short character profile. This will include the character's traits, motivations, and any changes they undergo throughout the series. Encourage her to think about why she likes this character and what makes them interesting.

  • Story Mapping:

Using a large piece of paper, Ella will create a story map of a specific episode. She will outline the main events, the conflict, and the resolution. This will help her visualize how the story unfolds and understand the structure of storytelling.

  • Creative Writing:

Ella will write a short story or a new episode idea featuring Dexter. She can explore what would happen if Dexter faced a new moral dilemma or introduced a new character. This activity encourages creativity and critical thinking.

  • Discussion and Reflection:

After completing the activities, Ella will share her character analysis and story map with you. Engage her in a discussion about her thoughts on the character's choices and the themes of the show. This reflection will help solidify her understanding.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes Dexter an interesting character? Is he a hero or a villain?"
  • "How does Dexter's job as a blood spatter analyst connect to his other life? Why is this duality important?"
  • "Can you think of a moment in the show where Dexter faced a tough choice? What would you have done in his situation?"
  • "What themes do you notice in 'Dexter'? For example, how does the show explore family, morality, and justice?"
  • "How does the setting of Miami influence the story? What do you think about the bright colors contrasted with the dark themes?"
  • "If you could create a new character for 'Dexter,' what would they be like? How would they change the story?"
