Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to prepare a cup of tea independently, understanding the different steps involved in the process and the significance of each step.

Materials and Prep

  • A kettle or pot for boiling water
  • A cup or mug
  • Tea leaves or tea bags (any flavor the student likes)
  • A spoon for stirring
  • Optional: milk, sugar, honey, or lemon for flavoring
  • A timer (can use a phone or clock)

Before the lesson, ensure that the student knows how to safely operate the kettle or pot and understands basic kitchen safety rules.

Activities

  • Tea Exploration:

Start by discussing different types of tea (black, green, herbal) and their unique flavors. The student can research their favorite type and share interesting facts.

  • Boiling Water:

Guide the student in boiling water safely. Discuss why water needs to be hot for tea and how different temperatures affect the flavor of different teas.

  • Brewing Time:

Teach the student about brewing times for different types of tea. Use a timer to measure how long to let the tea steep, and let them taste-test at different steeping times.

  • Flavoring Your Tea:

Allow the student to experiment with adding milk, sugar, honey, or lemon to their tea. Discuss how each addition changes the flavor profile of the tea.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that tea is one of the most popular drinks in the world? It's enjoyed by millions of people every day!"
  • "The temperature of the water is really important! For green tea, we usually want it around 175°F, while black tea is best at around 200°F. Can you guess why?"
  • "Brewing time can change the taste of your tea. If you brew it too long, it might taste bitter. How long do you think we should steep this tea?"
  • "What do you think happens when we add milk or sugar? It can make the tea creamier and sweeter! Let's try it and see how it changes the flavor."
  • "Tea can be a great way to relax. Some people even have a tea time ritual. What do you think would be a fun way to enjoy tea with friends or family?"
  • "There are so many flavors of tea! What’s your favorite? It's fun to try new ones and discover what you like best!"
  • "Tea has a long history. People have been drinking it for thousands of years. Isn't that cool?"
  • "It's not just about drinking tea; it's about enjoying the process. How do you feel when you're making your tea?"
  • "Did you know that herbal teas aren’t technically teas? They’re infusions made from herbs and spices. What herbal tea would you like to try?"
  • "Tea can be served hot or iced. Which one do you prefer, and why?"
  • "Making a cup of tea can be an art! How do you think we can make our tea-making special?"
  • "After making your tea, remember to clean up! What are some ways we can keep our kitchen tidy while cooking?"
