Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to write a short Minecraft story that includes characters, a setting, and a plot. They will learn how to express their creativity through writing while incorporating their love for Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Access to Minecraft (optional for inspiration)
  • A comfortable writing space
  • Imagination!

Before the lesson, think about some favorite Minecraft characters or adventures. This will help inspire the writing process!

Activities

  • Character Creation

The student will create their own Minecraft character. They can draw their character on paper and write a short description, including the character's name, special abilities, and favorite things in Minecraft.

  • Setting the Scene

Next, the student will choose a setting for their story. They can think about different Minecraft biomes (like forests, deserts, or oceans) and describe what their chosen setting looks like. They can draw a picture of it too!

  • Plot Development

Now it’s time to think about the story! The student will create a simple plot that includes a problem their character needs to solve. They can write down what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

  • Story Time!

Finally, the student will combine all their work into a short story. They can read it out loud to a family member or even act it out in Minecraft if they want!

Talking Points

  • "What is your character's name? Can you tell me something special about them?"
  • "Which Minecraft biome do you want to use for your story? What makes it interesting?"
  • "What problem will your character face? How will they solve it?"
  • "How does your story start? What happens in the middle? How does it end?"
  • "Can you think of any other characters that might help or challenge your character?"
  • "What is your favorite part of the story? Why do you like it?"
  • "How would you feel if you were in your character's shoes? What would you do?"
