Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic principles of building structures and how to create safe, fun, and imaginative homes using wooden blocks. They will also develop their creativity and problem-solving skills through hands-on building activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Wooden blocks (various shapes and sizes)
  • A flat surface for building (like a table or floor)
  • Measuring tape (optional, for measuring dimensions)
  • Pencil and paper for sketching designs (optional)
  • Timer (for timed challenges)

Before the lesson, ensure that the building area is clear and safe. Familiarize yourself with basic building concepts such as balance, stability, and design.

Activities

  • Design Your Dream Home:

Have the student sketch a design of their dream home on paper. Encourage them to think about the different rooms and features they want to include. Once they have a design, they can start building it with the wooden blocks!

  • Building Challenges:

Set up a series of building challenges where the student must create specific structures within a time limit. For example, they could be challenged to build the tallest tower or a house with a door and windows in just 10 minutes.

  • Storytime Structures:

Choose a favorite children’s story and have the student build a structure that represents a key element of the story. Afterward, they can share their creation and explain how it relates to the story.

  • Team Building:

If possible, invite a sibling or friend to join in on the building fun. Have them work together to create a large structure, emphasizing teamwork and collaboration.

Talking Points

  • "What materials do you think are important for building a strong structure?"
  • "How can you make sure your building doesn’t fall over? Let's think about balance!"
  • "Why do you think architects sketch their designs before building? What does it help them with?"
  • "Can you think of a time when you had to solve a problem while building? What did you do?"
  • "What features would you include in your dream home? Why are they important to you?"
  • "How does working with others change the way you build? What do you like about teamwork?"
  • "What’s your favorite part of building? Is it designing, stacking, or something else?"
  • "How do you feel when you complete a building project? What do you want to build next?"
  • "What kinds of shapes are the most stable when building? Can you show me?"
  • "How can we make our buildings more creative? Let’s think outside the box!"
  • "What did you learn about building today that you didn’t know before?"
  • "If you could build anything in the world, what would it be? Let’s dream big!"
