Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic principles of building structures using wooden blocks. They will design and construct a model home suitable for a three-year-old, considering safety, creativity, and functionality.

Materials and Prep

  • Wooden blocks of various shapes and sizes
  • A flat surface for building (like a table or the floor)
  • Measuring tape (optional, for fun measurements)
  • Paper and pencil for sketching designs
  • Timer (optional, for timed challenges)

Before the lesson, ensure the building area is clear of clutter and that the wooden blocks are clean and safe for use. Familiarize yourself with basic architectural concepts to guide the student.

Activities

  • Design Your Dream Home

Have the student sketch a blueprint of their ideal home for a three-year-old. Encourage them to think about the number of rooms, play areas, and safety features.

  • Block Building Challenge

Set a timer for 15 minutes and challenge the student to build the tallest structure they can using only the wooden blocks. Discuss the importance of a strong foundation.

  • Story Time with Blocks

After building, ask the student to create a short story about the family that lives in their block home. This will help them think about who uses the space and how.

  • Safety Inspection

Once the structures are built, conduct a 'safety inspection' where the student identifies any potential hazards in their design and makes adjustments to improve safety.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a home safe for a three-year-old? Let's think about sharp edges and stability!"
  • "Why do you think it's important to have different rooms in a house? How do they help the family?"
  • "Can you explain why we need a strong foundation for our buildings? What happens if it's weak?"
  • "How does a story about your home help you understand what it's like to live there?"
  • "What challenges did you face while building? How did you overcome them?"
  • "Let's talk about creativity! How did you come up with your design ideas?"
  • "Why is it important to think about the age of the people who will use the space? What do three-year-olds need?"
  • "How can we make our buildings more fun and playful? What colors or shapes would you use?"
  • "What did you learn about teamwork if you were building with friends? How does working together help?"
  • "What was your favorite part of building? Why did you enjoy it?"
  • "How can we use what we learned today in real life? Do you think you could design a real house?"
  • "What other materials do you think could be used to build homes? How would they change the design?"
