Objective

By the end of this lesson, Matilda will be able to create her own beautiful Victorian-style Valentine cards using simple crafting techniques. She will learn about the history of Valentine's Day and express her creativity through art.

Materials and Prep

  • Colored paper (red, pink, white)
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Ribbons or string (if available)
  • Stickers or stamps (if available)

Before the lesson, make sure to have a clean workspace ready for crafting. Familiarize yourself with some basic Victorian designs that can inspire Matilda's cards.

Activities

  • Introduction to Victorian Valentine Cards: Start by showing Matilda some examples of Victorian Valentine cards. Discuss the intricate designs and the importance of Valentine's Day during that time. Ask her what she thinks makes these cards special.

  • Designing the Card: Matilda will sketch her own design on a piece of colored paper. Encourage her to think about hearts, flowers, and maybe even a special message for someone she cares about.

  • Cutting and Assembling: Using scissors, Matilda will carefully cut out her designed shapes and assemble them on another piece of colored paper. This will help her practice her fine motor skills while having fun!

  • Decorating: Matilda can use markers, stickers, or any other decorative items to add color and personality to her card. Encourage her to be creative and express herself!

  • Writing a Message: Finally, Matilda will write a personal message inside her card. Discuss what kind words she might want to share with the person who will receive her Valentine.
