Materials and Prep
- A notebook or journal for observations
- A pencil or pen
- A camera or smartphone for taking pictures (optional)
- Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes for outdoor exploration
- Knowledge of local flora and fauna (use a guidebook or online resources to prepare)
Activities
-
Nature Walk:
Take a walk in a nearby park, forest, or nature reserve. Encourage the student to observe their surroundings carefully, noting different plants, animals, and sounds. They can use their notebook to sketch or write down their observations.
-
Plant Identification:
Choose a few local plants to identify. The student can use a guidebook or online resources to learn about these plants, noting their characteristics, habitats, and uses. They can also sketch the plants in their notebook.
-
Animal Tracking:
Look for signs of wildlife such as tracks, droppings, or nests. The student can research what animals might be in the area and what their tracks look like. They can document their findings in their notebook.
-
Nature Journal:
Encourage the student to maintain a nature journal throughout the lesson. They can write down their thoughts, sketches, and observations from their walk and other activities. This will help them reflect on what they’ve learned.
