Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic algebraic concepts through fun Lego activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Lego bricks (various sizes and colors)
  • Pen or pencil
  • Plain paper or notebook

No prior knowledge of algebra is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Building with Lego

Start by building a tower with 5 Lego bricks. Write down the number 5 on a piece of paper. Now, add 2 more bricks to the tower. Write down the new total number of bricks on the paper. Repeat this process a few times, each time adding 2 more bricks to the tower and writing down the new total. Discuss how the numbers on the paper are changing and what patterns can be observed.

  2. Missing Bricks

Create a small pile of Lego bricks and hide some of them. Ask the student to count how many bricks are visible. Write down this number on a piece of paper. Now, ask the student to find the hidden bricks and add them to the visible ones. Write down the new total number of bricks. Repeat this activity a few times, each time hiding a different number of bricks. Discuss how the total number of bricks changes and how it can be calculated.

  3. Number Patterns

Using Lego bricks, create a sequence of numbers such as 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on. Ask the student to identify the pattern and continue the sequence. Encourage them to use the Lego bricks to visually represent the numbers and patterns.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Algebra is like solving puzzles with numbers."
  • "In algebra, we use letters and symbols to represent numbers and relationships between them."
  • "Lego can help us understand algebra because we can build and count with the bricks."
  • "When we add more bricks to a tower, the total number of bricks increases."
  • "When we hide some bricks and then find them, we can figure out how many were hidden by adding the visible and hidden bricks."
  • "Patterns help us predict what comes next. We can use Lego bricks to create and continue number patterns."
