Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize basic concepts of fossils, dinosaurs, and paleontology through engaging activities that encourage exploration, creativity, and imaginative play.

Materials and Prep

  • Sand or dirt (for excavation activities)
  • Small toy dinosaurs
  • Plastic tools (like a small shovel or paintbrush)
  • Paper and crayons
  • Water (for cleaning tools and hands)

Before the lesson, prepare a small area with sand or dirt where the student can dig. Make sure to hide the toy dinosaurs in the sand for an exciting excavation experience!

Activities

  • Excavation Adventure:

Let the student dig in the sand or dirt to find hidden toy dinosaurs. Encourage them to use the small shovel and brush to carefully uncover the dinosaurs.

  • Dinosaur Art:

Provide paper and crayons for the student to draw their favorite dinosaur. Encourage them to use their imagination and create their own dinosaur with unique colors.

  • Fossil Discovery:

Talk about how fossils are made. Use the toy dinosaurs to create "fossils" in the sand by pressing them down and then removing them to see the shape they left behind.

Talking Points

  • "Look! We are going to be paleontologists today! That means we will dig for dinosaurs!"
  • "What color is your dinosaur? Can you draw it on the paper?"
  • "Fossils are like dinosaur footprints! Can we make a footprint in the sand?"
  • "Dinosaurs lived a long, long time ago. Can you roar like a dinosaur?"
