Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have developed skills in drama through miming and impromptu acting, enhancing their ability to express emotions and tell stories without words. They will also gain insights into historical figures and events, fostering a deeper understanding of how drama can reflect society and culture.

Materials and Prep

  • No specific materials are required for this lesson; the student will use their body and voice to express ideas.
  • Prepare a comfortable space where the student can move freely without distractions.
  • Encourage the student to think about historical figures or events they find interesting to incorporate into their performances.

Activities

  1. Mime Challenge:

    The student will choose a simple everyday activity (like cooking, gardening, or reading) and perform it without speaking. The goal is to convey the action and emotions through body language alone. After the performance, discuss what was effective and what emotions were conveyed.

  2. Impromptu Character Creation:

    The student will randomly select a historical figure (such as Cleopatra, Albert Einstein, or Rosa Parks) and create a short, impromptu monologue as that character. Encourage them to incorporate known facts about the figure’s life and to express their emotions and thoughts creatively.

  3. Group Storytelling:

    In a pretend group setting (the student can imagine an audience), the student will tell a story using both spoken words and mime. They can alternate between narrating and acting out key scenes, enhancing the storytelling experience through physical expression.
