Objective

By the end of this lesson, Maisie-Jane will understand the basics of genetic conditions, how they are inherited, and how traits are passed down from parents to offspring. She will be able to identify examples of genetic conditions and explain the concepts of dominant and recessive traits.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if possible)
  • Printed family tree template (can be drawn if printing isn't available)
  • List of common genetic conditions (can be created beforehand)

Before starting the lesson, ensure that Maisie-Jane understands basic genetics concepts like genes, chromosomes, and DNA. Prepare a list of common genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and color blindness for reference during the lesson.

Activities

  • Family Tree Exploration:

    Maisie-Jane will create a family tree that includes at least three generations. She will research and identify any genetic conditions present in her family, discussing how these conditions may have been inherited.

  • Trait Inheritance Game:

    Using colored pencils, Maisie-Jane will create a chart to represent dominant and recessive traits. She will pick a few traits (like eye color or hair type) and simulate how these traits might be passed on to offspring using a simple Punnett square.

  • Research and Presentation:

    Maisie-Jane will choose one genetic condition to research. She will prepare a short presentation on the condition, including its effects, how it is inherited, and any interesting facts she discovers.
