Objective

By the end of this lesson, Alec will learn about the different planets in our solar system, their order from the sun, what they are made of, and some fun facts about black holes and galaxies. He will also practice his English and math skills through engaging activities in Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft (on any device Alec can use)
  • Pencil and paper (for notes and math exercises)
  • Access to a computer or device to look up fun facts about planets

Before the lesson, make sure Minecraft is installed and ready to use. Prepare a list of planets and their order from the sun for reference.

Activities

  • Planet Building:

Alec will create each planet in Minecraft using different blocks to represent their unique colors and features. He can use blue for Earth, red for Mars, and so on. This will help him remember what each planet looks like!

  • Planet Order Race:

Alec will build a line of planets in the correct order from the sun in Minecraft. After he builds them, he can race to touch them in order while saying their names out loud.

  • Math with Planets:

Alec will count the number of planets and do simple addition. For example, "If we have 8 planets and we find 2 more stars, how many do we have now?"

  • Black Hole Mystery:

Alec will learn about black holes by creating a "black hole" in Minecraft. He can dig a deep hole and put signs around it with fun facts he finds about black holes.

  • Galaxy Exploration:

Alec will create a galaxy with stars and planets in Minecraft. He can use glowstone for stars and learn how galaxies are huge groups of stars!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that our solar system has 8 planets? Can you name them?"
  • "The planets are in a special order from the sun. Can you remember which one is first?"
  • "Each planet is made of different things. For example, Earth is made of rock and water. What do you think Mars is made of?"
  • "A black hole is like a giant vacuum in space that pulls everything in! Isn't that cool?"
  • "Galaxies are like huge cities in space filled with stars! Our galaxy is called the Milky Way. Can you imagine how many stars there are?"
