Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to engage in dramatic play centered around building and construction. They will create their own stories and characters while exploring concepts of teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving through imaginative play.

Materials and Prep

  • Open space for play (living room, backyard, etc.)
  • Household items for building (cushions, blankets, boxes, etc.)
  • Costumes or props (hats, tool belts, etc. made from available materials)
  • Paper and crayons for drawing construction plans
  • Optional: a timer for timed activities

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the play area is safe and free of any hazards. Discuss with the student what types of buildings they might want to create.

Activities

  • Building a Fort:

Using cushions, blankets, and boxes, the student will create their own fort. This activity encourages creativity and spatial awareness as they decide how to structure their fort.

  • Construction Role Play:

The student will choose a character (builder, architect, etc.) and act out a day in their life. They can use props to enhance their role and create a storyline about building a new structure.

  • Design a Building:

The student will draw a plan for a building they would like to construct. They can explain their design choices and what materials they would use if they were building for real.

  • Team Building Challenge:

Invite a family member to join in a team challenge where both the student and the adult work together to build a structure using the available materials. This promotes teamwork and communication.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think is the most important thing to consider when building something?"
  • "How can we make sure our fort is strong and safe?"
  • "What kind of building would you like to create, and why?"
  • "How do you think builders and architects work together to make a project successful?"
  • "What challenges do you think we might face while building, and how can we solve them?"
