Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of nutrition, including the importance of macronutrients and micronutrients, how to read food labels, and how to create balanced meals. The student will also learn to make healthier food choices and understand the impact of nutrition on overall health.

  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., fruits, vegetables, whole grains)
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Before the lesson, gather food labels from items in your pantry or fridge. Ensure you have a variety of products to compare. Choose a simple recipe that incorporates healthy ingredients for the cooking activity.

Activities

  • Food Label Scavenger Hunt:

    The student will explore different food labels and identify key information such as serving size, calories, and nutrient content. This will help them understand how to make informed choices when shopping for groceries.

  • Macronutrient Breakdown:

    Using the gathered food labels, the student will categorize foods into macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and discuss the importance of each nutrient in their diet.

  • Healthy Recipe Creation:

    The student will create a simple healthy dish using the ingredients prepared beforehand. They will measure out portions and discuss the nutritional value of each ingredient used.

  • Nutrition Quiz Game:

    At the end of the lesson, the student can take a fun quiz where they answer questions about nutrition concepts learned during the lesson. This will reinforce their understanding and retention of the material.
