Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of the basic principles of nutrition, including the importance of macronutrients and micronutrients, how to read food labels, and how to create a balanced meal plan. The student will also gain hands-on experience in preparing a healthy snack.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil for note-taking
- Access to a computer or smartphone for research
- Ingredients for a simple healthy snack (e.g., fruits, yogurt, nuts, or whole grain bread)
- Printed food labels (can be created beforehand) from various packaged food items
- Measuring cups and spoons
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with basic nutrition concepts, including macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals). Prepare the food labels and gather all necessary ingredients for the snack preparation activity.
Activities
-
Nutrition Scavenger Hunt:
Have the student research and find examples of different food categories (fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy) and their nutritional benefits. They can create a poster or digital presentation showcasing their findings.
-
Food Label Detective:
Provide the student with printed food labels and challenge them to identify key nutritional information, such as serving size, calories, and the amounts of macronutrients. Discuss why these details are important for making healthy food choices.
-
Snack Creation:
Using the ingredients gathered, have the student prepare a healthy snack. Encourage them to think about balance by including different food groups. They can also create a recipe card detailing the ingredients and the health benefits of each.
