Objective

By the end of this lesson, Cruz will be able to analyze a state or local policy issue by examining opposing positions, interpreting graphic data, identifying conflicting values, and developing persuasive strategies to support his viewpoint. This will enhance his civic reasoning and skills for informed and engaged participation in his community.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored markers or pencils
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Printed copies of a local or state policy issue (e.g., recycling program, school funding, etc.)
  • Graphic data (charts or graphs) related to the chosen policy issue
  • Note cards for persuasive strategies

Before the lesson, ensure Cruz has a basic understanding of the chosen policy issue and its significance in the community. Familiarize him with different perspectives on the issue.

Activities

  1. Research and Role Play: Cruz will research the chosen policy issue, identifying at least two opposing viewpoints. After gathering information, he will choose a position to defend and role-play a debate with a family member or friend, presenting arguments and counterarguments.

  2. Graphic Data Interpretation: Using the provided graphic data, Cruz will create a visual representation (like a poster) that summarizes the data and highlights key points for each side of the issue. This will help him understand how data can influence opinions.

  3. Values and Beliefs Discussion: Cruz will write down conflicting values and beliefs related to the policy issue. He will then discuss with a family member why these values matter and how they shape people's opinions on the issue.

  4. Persuasive Strategy Development: Cruz will create a list of persuasive strategies on note cards that he can use to convince others to adopt his position. He will practice delivering these strategies to a family member, focusing on clarity and confidence.
