Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a dot plot using data collected about their pet. They will learn how to organize information visually and understand how to interpret the data presented in the dot plot.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or pen
- A ruler (optional, for neatness)
- A list of questions to ask about their pet (e.g., breed, age, favorite toy, etc.)
Before the lesson, think about what information you want to collect about your pet. Prepare a few questions that will help you gather interesting data!

Pet Data Collection: Start by asking questions about your pet. For example, you can ask about their age, favorite activities, or even how many toys they have. Write down the answers in a list to prepare for your dot plot.

Creating the Dot Plot: Using the data collected, draw a horizontal line on your paper. Label the line with categories based on your questions. For instance, if you asked about favorite toys, write down the names of the toys below the line. Use dots to represent how many of each toy your pet has!

Analyzing the Data: Once your dot plot is complete, take a look at it. Discuss what the dots tell you about your pet. Which toy do they have the most of? Which one do they have the least? This will help you understand how to interpret the information visually.
