Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of food rationing during World War II, learn about the types of foods that were commonly used, and create a simple recipe using rationed ingredients.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for notes and recipes
  • Access to a kitchen for cooking (with adult supervision)
  • Basic kitchen tools (measuring cups, spoons, mixing bowl)
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (see Activities section for suggestions)
  • Knowledge of basic cooking safety

Activities

  1. Rationing Bingo: Create a bingo card with different foods that were rationed during World War II (like sugar, butter, and meat). As you talk about each food, mark it on the card. The first one to get five in a row wins!

  2. Recipe Creation: Using the ingredients you have, create a simple recipe that could have been made during the war. For example, a basic vegetable soup using rationed vegetables. Write down the recipe and talk about how each ingredient was important during that time.

  3. Food Timeline: Make a timeline of when certain foods became rationed during the war. Use pictures or drawings to represent each food item and when it was affected by rationing.

  4. Cooking Together: Choose one of the recipes you created and cook it together! Discuss how the ingredients were limited during the war and how people had to be creative with what they had.
