Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to create art and crafts inspired by anime.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Coloring materials (colored pencils, markers, or crayons)
  • Ruler

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Create a Symmetrical Anime Character:
  2. Guide the student to draw an anime character using basic shapes and lines. Encourage them to make the character symmetrical by using a ruler and measuring equal distances from the centerline.

  3. Design a Patterned Background:
  4. Have the student create a patterned background for their anime character. They can use arithmetic concepts such as repeating patterns, tessellations, or symmetry to design an interesting and visually appealing background.

  5. Add Color and Detail:
  6. Once the character and background are complete, the student can use their coloring materials to add color and detail to their artwork. Encourage them to think about color combinations and shading techniques to make their art vibrant and realistic.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • Mathematical Symmetry:
  • "Symmetry is an important concept in both mathematics and art. It refers to the balance and equality of shapes and forms. In our activity, we will use symmetry to create a balanced and visually pleasing anime character."

  • Repeating Patterns:
  • "Repeating patterns are sequences of shapes, colors, or designs that repeat in a predictable manner. We can use arithmetic concepts to create repeating patterns in our background, making it visually interesting."

  • Tessellations:
  • "Tessellations are patterns made by repeating shapes without any gaps or overlaps. They can be found in nature and art. We can incorporate tessellations into our background design to add complexity and creativity to our artwork."

  • Color Combinations:
  • "Color combinations refer to the selection and arrangement of colors in an artwork. By understanding the color wheel and using arithmetic concepts to create harmonious color schemes, we can make our art more visually appealing."

  • Shading Techniques:
  • "Shading techniques involve adding different tones and values to create depth and dimension in our artwork. By using arithmetic concepts to understand light and shadow, we can make our anime character look more realistic and three-dimensional."
