Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will develop active listening skills, enhance their ability to analyze audio content, and improve their understanding of rhythm, tone, and emotion in spoken language or music through repeated listening of a selected 20-second YouTube clip.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a device with YouTube
  • A selected 20-second YouTube clip (preferably one that has engaging audio content)
  • Notebook or digital document for note-taking

Before the lesson, ensure that the chosen clip is appropriate and engaging for the student. Familiarize yourself with the content to guide discussions effectively.

Activities

  • Active Listening Exercise:

Play the 20-second clip and ask the student to listen carefully without distractions. After the first listen, discuss what they heard and their initial impressions.

  • Repeat and Reflect:

Play the clip multiple times (5-10 times) and encourage the student to jot down any new details or feelings they notice with each repetition. This will help them focus on different aspects of the audio.

  • Creative Expression:

Ask the student to create a short poem or a paragraph inspired by the clip after listening to it several times. This will encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings creatively.

  • Discussion:

Engage the student in a discussion about the themes, emotions, and techniques used in the clip. Ask open-ended questions to stimulate deeper thinking and understanding.

Talking Points

  • "What emotions do you feel when you listen to this clip? Can you describe them?"
  • "Did you notice any changes in the tone or rhythm as you listened repeatedly?"
  • "How does the repetition affect your understanding or enjoyment of the clip?"
  • "What details did you pick up on the second or third listen that you didn't notice initially?"
  • "How can we apply what we've learned from this clip to other audio we listen to in the future?"
