Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a solid understanding of basic addition and subtraction, as well as the ability to solve simple word problems using these operations.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for writing down problems and solutions.
  • A timer or stopwatch for timed activities.
  • Space to move around for physical activities.
  • Knowledge of basic addition and subtraction facts (1-10).

Activities

  • Addition Relay Race:

Set up a relay race where the student must solve an addition problem at each station before moving to the next. For example, the first station could be "2 + 3", and once solved, they can run to the next station.

  • Subtraction Scavenger Hunt:

Hide cards around the house with subtraction problems written on them. The student must find the cards and solve the problems to collect points. This adds a physical element to learning!

  • Word Problem Creation:

Ask the student to create their own word problems based on real-life scenarios, such as "If I have 5 apples and I give away 2, how many do I have left?" Then, have them solve their own problems.

  • Math Story Time:

Read a short story that includes math concepts, and pause to discuss any addition or subtraction problems that arise within the story. Encourage the student to solve these problems as part of the narrative.

Talking Points

  • "Addition is like putting things together. When we add, we are combining numbers to find out how many we have in total."
  • "Subtraction is the opposite of addition. It helps us find out how many are left when we take some away."
  • "Word problems are like puzzles. They require us to think about the situation and decide whether to add or subtract to find the answer."
  • "Practicing math in fun ways, like games and activities, helps us remember the concepts better and makes learning enjoyable!"
  • "Every time we solve a problem, we are training our brains to think critically and solve challenges. Math is everywhere in our daily lives!"
