Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored pencils or markers
- Ruler
- Access to a safe area for a mock road sign display
Before the lesson, review the different types of traffic signs and their meanings. This will help Ysabell to understand the context and importance of each sign during the activities.
Activities
-
Traffic Sign Scavenger Hunt
Ysabell will go on a scavenger hunt in her neighborhood or a nearby park to find and identify various traffic signs. She can take pictures or draw the signs she finds and note their meanings.
-
Create Your Own Road Sign
Using the materials, Ysabell will design her own road sign that conveys an important message about road safety. She can choose to make it humorous or serious, but it should be clear and easy to understand.
-
Road Sign Role Play
Ysabell will set up a small mock road scenario using her created signs. She can take turns being a driver and a pedestrian, practicing how to follow the signs and the rules of the road.
Talking Points
- "Traffic signs are important because they help keep us safe on the roads. Can you think of a time when a sign helped you?"
- "Every road sign has a specific meaning. What do you think a stop sign tells us?"
- "Creating your own road sign can be a fun way to express what you think is important for road safety. What message do you want to share?"
- "When we role-play following road signs, we can practice making good decisions as drivers and pedestrians. How does it feel to be in both roles?"
