Objective
By the end of this lesson, Spencer will be able to recognize and understand basic addition and subtraction concepts through engaging activities that promote hands-on learning and exploration.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or colored pencils
- Small objects for counting (like buttons, blocks, or toys)
- A comfortable space to work and play
- Prepare a simple number line from 0 to 10 on a piece of paper
Activities
-
Counting Adventure:
Go on a counting adventure around the house or yard. Spencer can collect small objects (like leaves, stones, or toys) and count them as he collects. Ask him to group them in sets of 2 or 3 to practice addition.
-
Draw and Add:
Using paper and crayons, Spencer can draw a picture of his favorite animal. Then, he can add more animals to the picture and write a simple addition sentence (e.g., "I have 2 cats and I draw 3 more. 2 + 3 = 5").
-
Subtraction with Snacks:
Using his favorite snacks (like grapes or crackers), Spencer can practice subtraction. Start with a certain number of snacks, and then take some away. Ask him to count how many are left and write a subtraction sentence (e.g., "I started with 5 grapes, and I ate 2. 5 - 2 = 3").
-
Number Line Hop:
Create a number line on the floor using tape or just by marking it with paper. Spencer can hop to different numbers as you call out addition or subtraction problems. For example, if you say "3 + 2", he can hop from 3 to 5!
Talking Points
- "Can you count how many objects you have? Let’s see how many we can find together!"
- "When you draw more animals, what happens to the total? Can you tell me your addition sentence?"
- "If you eat some snacks, how many do you have left? Let’s write a subtraction sentence together!"
- "When you hop on the number line, how does it feel to move from one number to another? What do you think happens when we add?"
- "Why do you think we use numbers to show how many? Isn’t it fun to see how they change?"
- "What was your favorite part of today’s math adventure? Let’s share what we learned!"
