Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brodi will have a deeper understanding of guitar theory, including scale patterns, chord relationships, and composition techniques. He will be able to apply this knowledge to enhance his personal playing style and creativity on the guitar.

Materials and Prep

  • Guitar (acoustic or electric)
  • Tuner
  • Metronome (or a metronome app)
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a recording device (optional for composition analysis)

Before starting, make sure the guitar is in tune and that you have a comfortable practice space. Familiarize yourself with basic chord shapes and finger placements if you haven't already.

Activities

  • Scale Pattern Practice: Spend 15 minutes practicing major and minor scale patterns. Use a metronome to gradually increase your speed. Focus on finger placement and smooth transitions between notes.

  • Pentatonic and Blues Scale Exploration: Learn the pentatonic scale and the blues scale. Play them over a backing track or use a loop pedal to experiment with improvisation.

  • Chord Progression Creation: Create a simple chord progression using major and minor chords. Write down the progression and try playing it in different rhythms.

  • Melody Writing: Over your chord progression, write a simple melody line. Use the scales you've practiced to help guide your note choices.

  • Composition Analysis: Choose a song you like and analyze its structure. Identify the chord progressions, scales used, and any interesting techniques the artist employs.
